Reclaimed & Antique Flooring
There are many versions of reclaimed timber, some being genuine and some not.
In our opinion reclaimed should be exactly that like “BOG OAK”
Bog oak is a type of wood that comes from oak trees that have been buried in peat bogs, river beds, or other marshy environments for hundreds or thousands of years. The wood is preserved from decay by the lack of oxygen and enriched by the acids and minerals in the environment. This process changes the wood’s characteristics, resulting in a dense, hard, dark brown or black colour
What makes True Bog Oak so special?
Our Bog Oak trees have been buried under saturated wet soil deposits for thousands of years. Transformed into shades of dark greenish and greyish-brown up to deep black, the wood can be beautifully dense and refined in grain. This type of wood is much harder than freshly felled trees.
We can get a lot of this type of Oak from Canada Ireland where there are massive peat bogs as well as the Fens.
Reclaimed Oak;
Other types of real reclaimed wood will have nail holes, splits, large holes where the knots have fallen out. It has come from mine pits, old ships, abandoned and demolished buildings. There is only a limited supply which is why we use the timbers and veneers that others do not want to create our antique oak floors including the very special shrunken faced oak.
Antique & Wild Shrunken Faced Oak Engineered Flooring:
By letting mother nature take her time to sculpt the surface of the oak, it creates a unique form with undulations and enhanced knots. The knots stand out with deep ridges following the grain around them.
Because nature has created the organic look the surface feel soft to the touch and is very hard wearing.
When we make these flooring options, we have expert artisan craftsmen who accentuate the grain and knots in the large trees.
This short video will give you a feel of the depth of the face of the board.
The image below shows how the very hard knots rise above the surface to create the undulation in the surface.
The finish can be lacquered or hard wax oil. With hard wax oil you get the rich reclaimed board look.
